I have an 18/55mm however the auto focus is not working anymore. I found this a good excuse to buy a new lens :)
I practically shoot everything, from portraits to night scenes, macro to far away objects. Therefore the ideal, I guess, would be a lens which has quite a range e.g. a 28-300mm. The 18-55mm is the only lens I ever had therefore I have literally no idea what's best to buy.
I will be travelling to the U.S. this month (where I'm planning to buy my camera) and will be travelling to las vegas amongst others. So I defenitely need a lens that can capture Las Vegas's vivacity very nicely :)
However, I do not like to spend a lot!!
Thanks a lot :)
If you're looking for versitility, in a single lens, I would recommend the 18-200. Canon has a very nice one for around $600, or if that's out of your price range, you can find a Sigma lens with a Canon mount for just over $300. I have both of them, and the Canon Lens is a bit better, but the Sigma is a better Value.
As for the shooting, both lenses will be comparable to your 18-55 for wide angle shooting, but this lens will extend your range significantly. The Canon is f5.6 at 200 and the Sigma is f6.3, so neither one will perform well in low light situations, but if you're looking for a 200mm lens for good light, you're looking at much more than $300-$600.
Hope this helps.
Well, if you want one lens that can do what your 18-55mm zoom did and some more then I would check out a 18-200mm zoom. There is even a 18-250mm lens and 18-270mm lens out there.
You can see what Canon has and the respected independent lens makers, Tamron, Sigma, and Tokina (first 3 links below are to their websites). I have owned lenses made by these lens makers in the past and they have worked fine.
I posted a link to photo.net where there are discussion forums and you can go to the Canon forums and see what some other photographers suggest.
Also some links below to some photo dealers and Amazon where you can shop but also read customer review on some of there items.
Hope this helps.

I currently have a Tamron 18-270mm for my Nikon D200, and it is excellent. The focus is fast, although not very accurate in very low light. It is very sharp in the day-time though, and will have no problems for shooting in las vegas, even at night. The VC (image stabilizer) is a little loud though...
