What should be my first DSLR?

I need help! I don't know what camera I should get! Friends tell me to get Nikon D40. Some tell me to get a Canon. But then I saw the Pentax K-X. My first choice was the Nikon D3000. But someone told me to get Pentax K-X since it has a in-body autofocus motor. I don't want to spend a lot of money for lenses like up there. (Nikon) Pentax can do video, and looks pretty good. Can someone please give me some kind of feedback? My email is dhpinoy@gmail.com thanks for the help!

Are you a serious hobbyist? If you are you won't care about doing video... but if you're not well...

Anyway I own and recommend the Rebel XS because of its superb photos and build. Canon has a great selection of lenses, that is if you're actually serious.

Here's a look at a few of what I've gotten with my XS.

Whoever told you to choose the Pentax K-x was correct. The K-x not only has a focus motor in the camera body it also has Pentax's version of image stabilization in the camera body. Any lens you use will become, in effect, an image stabilized lens. Plus, the K-x is weather sealed which makes it a more rugged camera.

You can use every Pentax K-mount lens made since 1985, although there will be some limitations with the older manual focus ones - but you can use them.

The Nikon D40 has been discontinued and replaced by the D3000. As your friend said, it doesn't have a focus motor in the body so you'll always have to buy Nikon's AF-S lenses. Nikon (like Canon) chose to put its version of image stabilization in some of their modern lenses.

My money would be spent on the Pentax K-x.

There are a number of good brands so don't be sold on the idea one brand is better than another. I would keep your costs down. I would get a DSLR with a short zoom (like a 18-55mm) to start. No reason to spend more than $425 to $550. Either a 10MP or 12MP will do just fine.

Below, I listed some links, the first link listed below is to a web page that lists the 3 DSLR cameras I am recommending. This list will let you compare features and specs, also it has links to reviews of the cameras, the reviews include sample images from the cameras. Also I included some links to some dealers so that you can try and get the best price. Some dealers have some nice extras, free shipping is very common, and sometimes they are offering a free memory card and/or camera bag. Sometimes you have to click in the "add to cart" button to see the actual price.

Here are some models that I think are well worth researching:

Nikon D3000 10MP DSLR Digital Camera with 18-55mm VR Lens - $490
EOS Rebel XS 10MP DSLR Digital Camera Kit (Black) with 18-55mm IS Lens - $449
Pentax K-x 12MP DSLR with 18-55mm Zoom (has HD Video also) - $550

Hope this helps. Pick a price range, some features you know you want, and even consider which camera feels good in your hand as a factor. Plenty of great cameras, get one you like and start learning the principles of photography and you will be on your way to making some great images.

If you want to stay under $500 then go Nikon or Canon but, I think the Pentax could be of special interest, since it can do HD video and has excellent quality at higher ISO settings which can be useful in low light places and helping get the picture. These features, especially the HD video, on a Nikon or Canon will cost you $100 to $200 more. I think you will be fine with the Pentax, but if you decide to go with one of the other brands, you will be fine also.

If you have any questions and if you think I can be of help then please do contact me.

Hope this helps. Good luck.
