Which camera is best for under $400?

Later this year I am going on a trip to Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. I was wondering what would be the best camera I could get for those conditions under $400. It does not have to be an extremely portable camera, I just want to know the one that would give me the best pictures possible.

I would without a doubt invest in a Canon camera. The quality is superb, i myself have a canon Rebel XSi dslr. From all the companies i have previously owned such as nikon and sony, the Canon camera I had held up against many beatings and has helped me win many photography contests in my school. For $400 you might not get a dslr, but you can still get an amazing fully functioning camera. The Canon PowerShot SX20 fits the bill. It has a whopping 12.1 megapixels, 20x optical zoom, and its user friendly. The link below will give you all the specifications and you could look at the user ratings too. Have fun traveling! :)

You ought to be able to pick up a nice used DSLR for that. Check out:

Look for the D40 or D70, from Nikon. They are great cameras, and should be in your price range. If it comes body only, make sure to get a lens as well.

You can buy the Sony A230 DSLR with 18-55mm lens for $429.95 at B&H.

The A230 will out-perform any compact digicam you can buy for the same money. In fact, the Canon G11 is $20.00 more at B&H.
