Why do i need 8AA's or the EN-EL4 in my MB-D10 grip to get to 8fps?

This is something that i don't quite understand. Why can't i just use the regular EN-EL3e to shoot at 8fps?

I know the EN-EL4 has more power, but why does it need those extra 3.7 volts to get 3 more fps?

I've got a D700 by the way.
